Job Description

Senior Data Manager supporting Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Preventive Medicine Branch, Department of Epidemiology and the Accession Medical Standards Analysis and Research Activity (AMSARA).

  • Assists senior staff in data manipulations and follow-up analysis.
  • May work directly with division staff on developing computer-assisted interviewing software, telecommunication links, encryption algorithms, system/software documentation, and methods for data quality assurance.
  • Will provide analytic support and travel to meetings and conferences when necessary.
  • Database documentation also includes: developing file structures and filename conventions, data dictionaries, and, standard operating procedures for data cleaning and review, development of final files, and, merging of files for analysis.
  • Database maintenance requires regular and routine review of the status of databases and associated documents, standard operating procedures (SOPs), etc.
  • Maintains multiple protocol books and chronicles manuscript preparation. Develops hard copy tracking and filing system, evaluate forms and develops coding methods, identify study needs and collaborate with analysts and programmers on implementing study data management needs.
  • Responsible for International Classification of Diseases 9th and 10th edition coding, Department of Defense Instruction (DODI) accession coding, and Veterans Affairs Schedule for Rating Disabilities coding for all source data, and developing queries to answer simple descriptive questions.
  • Provides administrative support in the management of both WRAIR and field operations and technical programs.
  • Ensures that all human subjects training and certification requirements are met, in particular regarding protocol submission, amendments, continuing review reports, and final reports.
  • Provides direct functional support to ensure timely submission of AMSARA and DES protocol submissions, amendments, continuing review reports, and closeout reports, in accordance with WRAIR IRB timelines.
  • Ensures that a reference library in support of AMSARA and DES is maintained.
  • Provides direct functional support to staff for EndNote (or a similar referencing system).
  • Ensures that manuscript text, tables and references are properly formatted for manuscripts being prepared for journal submission.
  • Conducts routine AMSARA/DES website maintenance, updates, and modifications as needed.
  • Ensures that research program objectives are communicated, met and documents results. 
  • Duties involve substantial coordination and interface with military and civilian collaborators.

Job Requirements

2-5 years of related experience. 5 or more years of related experience preferred.

  • Previous experience working with military datasets and relevant military regulatory documents
  • Working knowledge of WRAIR human subject protection, publication and data sharing agreement regulations and policies, as well as working experience with PHI, PII, ICD-9/ICD-10 and DODI coding, completing inventories and managing/updating AMSARA SOPs.
  • Database management requires experience in Microsoft Access or writing computer programs using SAS; must be proficient in importing data, creating, updating, and manipulating datasets.
