GDIT is currently seeking a Sr. Routing and Switching Network Engineer in Bethesda, Maryland to join our team managing and operating state-of-the art service provider network and telecommunications infrastructures for the National Institute of Health (NIH).  The team provides high-speed network access, network security and telecommunications support for NIH’s scientific and administrative communities, including the NIH Office of the Director, 27 Institutes and Centers, Department of Health and Human Services Operating Divisions, and external customers.

In this role you will be a member of the Infrastructure Engineering Group that supports high-speed, highly available network infrastructures (Cisco Routing and Switching Network, MPLS Network, data center, backbone, facilities network).

Task and responsibilities in this role include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Review, propose, and execute solutions to meet contract objectives to include: monitoring performance and fine-tuning configurations to maintain optimum performance
  • Design and test innovative technologies and architectures
  • Develop hardware and configuration standards
  • Review impacts of overall solutions and work with program teams to formulate design plans that factors technology investments and risks
  • Transition technical requirements into a working solution.
  • Participates in all project phases to verify that the design is installed, configured and documented following best practices
  • Review, understand, and update technical diagrams and documentation
  • Recognize and mitigate risks and issues to on-going projects
  • Work with Security team to review and propose solutions for Audit findings and provide remediation guidance
  • Review new service requests, propose solutions, draft customer responses, and execute against solution
  • Effectively communicate with project managers, engineers, and operations personnel
  • Train and mentor all levels of staff and ensure solutions supported are maintained once deployed

To Qualify, You Must Meet These Basic Qualifications

  • BS or the equivalent and 10 years related experience
  • Must have demonstrated experience serving in a senior network engineer capacity
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • CCNP
  • Experience working on live networks 

It Would Be Great If You Also Had

  • Multiple CCIE certifications  (passed both the written and practical exams in at least one of the following areas of specialization: Service Provider, Routing & Switching, Data Center) 
  • 10 years Service Provider networking experience
  • Ability to deliver high degree of customer service
  • Prefer degree in field of Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering
  • Existing HHS (NIH) Clearance


  • This is an on-site position
  • One day a week telework is allowed with customer approval after nine months
  • Ability to obtain Level 6 Public Trust
